Product Description
Infrared photography is a specialized field used in black & white, color, and false-color photography. To achieve the desired infrared effects, a dedicated infrared filter is required. These filters block visible light and transmit only the invisible infrared spectrum. Correct exposure depends on experience, test shots, and lighting conditions.

For black & white and technical or scientific photography, infrared filters are essential, as they allow only infrared radiation to reach the sensor or film.

Tips for Digital Infrared Photography

  • Test IR sensitivity of a digital camera using an IR remote control

  • Infrared focus point lies slightly beyond visible light focus

  • Set white balance manually or automatically after mounting the filter

  • Most digital cameras have an internal IR-cut filter, but some allow residual IR transmission

  • Compose and focus before attaching the filter

  • Image processing can enhance IR results (contrast, histogram adjustment, color channel control)

  • Infrared photography remains experimental in both digital and analog workflows

Tips for Shooting with an IR Filter

  • Subjects in strong sunlight provide the highest infrared content

  • Use a tripod due to long exposure times

  • Set framing before mounting the filter

  • Focus manually using the IR index or prior to attaching the filter

  • Avoid shooting wide open; AF sensors may partially focus on IR

  • Exposure often needs strong compensation or manual adjustment

  • In B&W mode, judge exposure via camera display; in color mode, use the histogram (especially the red channel)

  • JPEG format can be used as an alternative to complex RAW processing

Tips for Image Editing

  • For high-quality black & white results, convert to LAB mode and use only the L channel or red channel

  • If contrast appears too low or images show a strong red cast, adjust black and white points in post-processing
